Photo: Taken before a league match between Akosombo Textiles FC (AKOTEX) and Asante Kotoko in the late 1960's.

Osei Kofi (left in photo) is one of the highly rated legends of the Ghana League. A true Kotoko legend who despised a lucrative move to Stoke City after recommendation from 1966 England world cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks, who made a direct comparison of Osei to the legendary George Best at the time.

Osei was part of the 1970 Africa conquering Kotoko team, and won several Championship with the Kumasi club.
Robert Mensah is also a legend of the Ghana League playing for Ebusua Dwarfs before moving to Asante Kotoko where he made his name. He won the 1970 African Club Championship with Kotoko, and played at the 1968 Tokyo Olympics, as well as finals in Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana the same year.

Conicidentally, he died prematurely in 1971, same year another legend Shamo Quaye was born.

Till date, Bob Mensah remains one of the best goalkeepers to have come from the African continent.
Prekese Ghanamedia When we were young, we were told that nobody ever scored against him. His legendary status was so high to us that we associated some sort of mystical powers to his skiils. May he rest in Peace.

...on this day 30th May 1987, Asante Kotoko 5-1 Zamalek @ Kumasi Sports Stadium.

For clarity of any doubt on the previous post, this is the only photo i could lay my hands on which was taken on that fateful day in Kumasi. The other photo was taken around the same era but different match. Unfortunately it's not a group photo.

    • Kwadwo Okyere Darko Thanks Ghana Football Legacy. I think I still have my copy of the graphic sports from that day somewhere in my library. Will find a way to send you copies when I lay my hands on it.
But, yes, I so remember this day. I also remember that the late J
ones Attoquayefio and Sam Ardey of the Black Stars management then we're also quite instrumental as they helped coach Malik out for that match in view of an impending Black Star qualifier soon after the match.
That period was so important in Ghana sports history because not only did it coincide with the victorious Conerstone campaign in WAFU, it also happened soon after Michael Ebo Danquah had wrestled the WBC intercontinental flyweight belt from Constazo ' Little' Baggaio of the Philippines in Accra.
Those were the days oo, Ghana Football Legacy!!!!!

    • Marc 'Mystic' Baffoe-Bonnie The Golden Boy...that day,dude ran midfield at a strolling pace..skill,dexterity,no rushing..that left foot!!Too much.
Those were the days gone by,when Faabu was a force to be reckoned with on the African continent.

    • Sam George Name more stuff, this is interesting and refreshing.
      2
    • Samuel Kissiedu Kofi Abbrey was the man of the match with his legendary crosses and corner kicks that fetched some of the goals.
It was the day Ghana stood still. Fans and foes alike of Kotoko poured onto the streets to celebrate the gallantry of the reds; the rise
of the Porcupine Warriors from grass to grace before the capacity crowd. LIike biblical Zaccheaus , some fans climbed the floodlights right up to the very top to catch a glimpse of the unfolding spectacle. The amazing fighting spirit exhibited by Kotoko testified to the resilience of the Ghanaian when confronted with adversity.
The victory was so infectious and fired a sense of nationalism that the entire squad was airlifted to Accra following day for government to bask in the glory too . That was how the power of soccer glued our country at a time of political divisions and acrimony. .
Then Kotoko boss Ofori Nuako alias Pao became an instant hero for executing the biggest humiliation in Zamaleks history. The Egyptians looked dazed throughout the epic game and did not know what hit them . Back to Cairo the attributed the defeat to African juju. But in reality, they lost to a fired and focused Kotoko that had done a proper homework and were poised for victory. The Egyptians were complacent and tactically inferior.

      • GHANA Football Legacy yes 3 of Abbrey's corner kicks and crosses resulted in goals to both Prince Opoku's goals and Sarfo Gyamfi's equaliser. Sarfo's 2nd goal was a powerful long range shot, Saarrah Mensah came on late to finish from close range. Razak was very instrumental in this match as his dexterity and experience really came to bare. Thomas Hammond was also a pillar at the back both in air and on ground. Zamalek did sub their keeper to keep them in the game but to no avail.
