DO YOU REMEMBER THE GLORIOUS DAYS OF GOLDFIELDS (now Ashanti Gold SC)?

Photo:
Togolese striker Kossi Noutsoudje congratulated by teammates Princeton Owusu Ansah, Yaw Owusu and Joe Okyere after a goal scored at the Len Clay stadium in 1997.

SEASONS:
That season saw the Obuasi based club play the first final of the newly introduced CAF Champions league but painfully lost to Raja Casablanca of Morocco on penalties after 1-1 aggregate scoreline over two legs in December 1997.

Goldfields had already won the newly introduced Ghana Premier league 3 consecutive times; 1992/93, 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons. They had also won the Ghana FA Cup in 1992.

QUALITY OF PLAYERS:
By 1997, Kotoko and Hearts of Oak would even envy players of Goldfields who were bench warmers; that was extent of quality players they had in their fold then. Just to mention a few; they had 3 quality goalkeepers who were all national team players in Nimome Weke (Togo), Anthony Osei Kwadwo (Black Stars) and Richard Obimpeh (Black Meteors).

In defence they had the likes of Agyeman Duah, Issah Rahman, Princeton Owusu Ansah, Sammy Adjei (captain), Yaw Owusu, Kofi Amoako, Edward Acquaye, Eric Boakye and Tony Arhinful.

In midfield, they had the likes of Ibrahima Kone (Ivorian), Lawrence Adjei, Kwabena Boateng, Adjetey Lee, Eben Dadzie , George Alhassan, Kofi Owusu etc.

In attack, they had; Kofi Deblah (2 time goalking in 1995/96 & 1996/97), Joe Debrah, Joe Okyere, Kossi N. (Togo), Nana Arhin Duah etc.

On their technical bench, the could boast of the likes of Herbert Addo, Malik Jabir and the rest.

BRING BACK THOSE DAYS!!!
